How Affirmations can help you achieve your goals - the ultimate guide
It doesn't matter whether you are in a motivation low, want to become more productive or simply want to achieve a long-desired goal. Affirmations are the perfect method to do so.
What are positive affirmations?
Positive affirmations (actually all affirmations are positive) are a known method to think more positive in your daily life. They are an easy way to reprogram our thoughts.
Why use affirmations?
People who use affirmations want to change their thoughts, behavior or feelings to positive ones.
What most people forget: Thoughts, behavior, and feelings are interrelated. That is, if I think positively, I also behave more positively, become more self-confident and feel better.
That all sounds very simple, doesn't it? It is! But it's not always as straightforward as I just described. Especially at the beginning, you will think to yourself: "Why am I doing this right now?" But that is part of the process and you should never lose sight of the big picture: You want to and will change to the positive!
How to come up with affirmations?
Let's say I want to be more confident. Then I think about an affirmation first. Let's take the following as an example:
I believe in myself more and more every day.
As you may have noticed, I'm not using the present form here, such as:
I'm the best. or I'm extremely confident.
The reason for this is that when we use the present form for affirmations, some people(and by people I mean the very people, using the affirmation) immediately have doubts. Especially people who don't have a high self-confidence will think of the following:
- "You don't believe that yourself."
- "Keep on dreaming."
- "Don't screw with yourself."
Set goals for yourself and keep the process in mind. Self-improvement is a marathon - not a sprint.
How to use affirmations?
Positive affirmations are best used right after getting up in the morning.
By reciting your affirmations in the morning, you begin the day with a positive feeling and are motivated. And there is nothing better than to start the day motivated.
Another advantage of using affirmations in the morning is that you shake off negativity, for example when you had a nightmare.
That's what your morning could look like:
- You get up and drink a big glass of water to wake up and hydrate yourself right away.
- You get in front of your mirror and take 3 deeps breaths.
- Look into your eyes and be sure to wear a positive look on your face. (after all, we want to start the day in a good mood).
- Recite your affirmations. Yes, it can be several. Pay attention to a calm and slow pronunciation. But still, speak with a firm and convincing voice.
- Repeat your affirmations 3-5 times. So that they really stay in your memory.
- Stay still for a few seconds and process what you just said. Let your body feel that you really mean what you just said.
How to write affirmations?
First, you need to figure out what you're gonna use the affirmation for. Do you want to be happier or motivate yourself? Do you want to become more self-confident, exercise more or just earn more money?
Affirmations can help with all these things. So when you've thought about what your goal is, you sit down and start thinking about your affirmation. As I said, make sure that you don't use the present form for this. You want to visualize a process. For example:
"I will continue to increase my productivity to become even more successful." or "I'm gonna keep jogging to get the body I want."
This keeps your goal in front of you and gives you a direction.
How do affirmations work?
Affirmations work just like physical training. Most things we master only after many thousands of repetitions. Muscles also need stimulation to grow. And the same goes for our brain. We have to train our brain to keep certain thought patterns or to break out of them.
For example, if you're very shy and you're going to become more extroverted, you have to train your brain to do that. We can do that through repetition. We have to recite our affirmations over and over again to get our brain used to them.
Famous people who use affirmations
Many successful people use affirmations to motivate themselves. Want a few examples? Here you go:
Arnold Schwarzenegger's plan was always to become a world-famous bodybuilder and movie star. He didn't want to live a normal life in Austria but always dreamed of America. Even though all the people around him told him again and again that he couldn't do that, he didn't let himself be intimidated by it but started to shape the vision in his head.
He simply set himself the goal of becoming the world's best bodybuilder and went to work. He once said in an interview that it was not difficult to achieve that at all. Because he knew exactly where he wanted to go and just had to do it.
Therefore: Set yourself a goal and simply work on it until you have reached it!
He once said that he was always an A-List Hollywood star in his head, everyone else just didn't know it yet. And so he used different affirmation techniques to show himself every day where he wants to go.
Jim Carrey was an unknown actor in the early 1990s who barely made a living. So he wrote himself a check for $10 million for his acting services and put it into his wallet to motivate himself. In 1994 he finally got the role of Lloyd Christmas in Dumb and Dumber and earned $10 million dollars for it.
