How to Be Confident When You Feel Otherwise
Confidence can provide long-term benefits or fleeting glimpses of success. It is something that seems natural for some people, but others struggle to find moments of it. If you struggle with the idea of being confident in any aspect of your life, then there are some meaningful ways that you can give your perspective a boost.
“Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage, and confidence in the doing,” Theodore Roosevelt once said.
If you want to reclaim your confidence, then these options will help you find the courage to press forward even when the energy you feel might try to convince you to take a different path.
1. Take care of yourself right away in the morning.
The fastest way to start feeling confident is to prepare your body for success. When you get up in the morning, establish a routine which allows you to take care of your needs each day. Take a shower if you want. Save some time for shaving, brushing your teeth, or applying the creams and lotions your skin needs for a healthy shine. You can turn your mood around entirely with this one action each day.
2. Think positive thoughts in stressful situations.
If you make a mistake, do you call yourself “stupid”? Negative self-talk will quickly drain away any confidence you have at that moment. Look for the successes that you have in each situation. When a mistake happens, then take a few moments to consciously look for ways to learn from that situation. Encourage yourself to keep going instead of criticizing the thoughts or decisions you make. 3. Try to help someone every day.
Generosity can take many forms. When you help someone else out of a tough situation, then it can inspire more confidence in your future actions. Think of this option as a way to prepare for similar issues that might happen in your life. When you feel like a good person, then the negative energy tends to disappear.
4. Stick to your principles in every situation.
If you decide to compromise on your values in any way, then it can feel like you’ve lost a small part of who you are. Make enough of them, and your confidence can feel like it is gone for good. The right choice to make is rarely the easiest decision in any situation. Living your life by the ethics which defines you allows you to stay true to yourself, which is the key to unlocking your self-confidence and self-esteem.
5. Take time to prepare each day.
Take 15 minutes each day to prepare for the circumstances that you expect to face during the day. Run through different scenarios in your mind to think of creative ways that you could respond if you face a similar situation. If you need to take a test, then spend time studying for it in the days before instead of the hours before it is due. Avoid procrastination instead of embracing it. You may not have the power to control how others treat you, but it is your choice to react positively or negatively. Prepare for positivity whenever possible.
6. Adjust your posture so that you feel confident.
When you sit for a prolonged time for any reason, then the slouching that occurs can destroy your confidence. Not only will it cause pain in your neck, shoulders, and back, but it can also sap the energy away from your self-confidence. Sitting up a little straighter, standing tall, and maintaining good posture throughout the day creates less fatigue in your body, allowing you to tap into your confidence centers when needed.
7. Dress for success.
You don’t need to drop an entire paycheck on your wardrobe to feel confident. It does help to dress nicely each day if you want to feel good about yourself. If you enjoy a t-shirt and jeans, then start rocking that look whenever you can. Dressing up can encourage positive energy as well. Your feelings will often reflect what you think about yourself when catching your reflection in the mirror.
8. Learn something new every day.
Knowledge is empowering. We are never finished with the learning process because there is always something new to discover. Try to read at least one book every week. Start a new hobby this month which has always intrigued you in some way. You can even create unique learning opportunities by volunteering in a community organization. Each time you take the time to build up your base of wisdom, you will also be giving your confidence a boost of energy.
9. Make time to be active every day.
Your body needs a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week to maintain your health. When you can give yourself a little more, then your confidence levels will begin to rise in time as well. Your levels of activity are dependent upon your current medical state, so speak with your doctor first before starting a new exercise routine. Then commit to a time for walking, running, yoga, or your preferred activity every day.
10. Embrace gratefulness.
No one achieved greatness all by themselves. We are all a product of the different voices in our lives. These are the people who are our parents, friends, co-workers, husbands, wives, partners, and anyone else you let into your closest boundaries. Their confidence helped you to find your own one day. Reflecting on these people and their gifts can be a humbling experience, and it will also bring you back to your center.
11. Smile even if you don’t feel happy.
When you smile, it creates a mental change of attitude that shifts negative energy into something positive. Even if you don’t feel happy, trying to smile anyway will still provide you with this result. Other people react differently to smiles when compared to frowns, which will create more opportunities for you throughout the day as well. Your confidence will start to grow when you see how contagious your smiles can be.
12. Look for a new solution.
When you find yourself stuck in a stressful situation, then it can feel like an impossible task to find a solution. If it feels like there is no way out, then your confidence will want to shrink into the background. It is at this point that many people begin to complain about their circumstances.
13. Realize that it is okay to be different.
Humanity succeeds because of its diversity. We spend a lot of energy sometimes trying to fit in with others instead of following the journey we wish to follow. If you allow your confidence to be defined by the world around you, then it might always feel just out of reach. Take time to discover who you are, and then stay true to yourself.
14. Make one small, positive change in your life.
There are some goals which take a lot of time to correct, like choosing to stop smoking or drinking alcohol. Try focusing on a smaller way to create positive energy in your life. What could help you to have more power? How could you solve a motivation problem? When you focus on solutions to simple issues, then the more significant issues have a stronger foundation from which to work.
Following these ideas can help you to reclaim your confidence or help it to continue growing. When you can stay focused on the positive energy that surrounds you, then your successes have an excellent chance of being more than a fleeting experience.
